Maximizing Employee Engagement

By honoring the needs and motivations of the right people on our team.

I already had a finance degree from BYU's Marriott School of Management under my belt when I decided I needed to get an MBA from Arizona State in order to climb the corporate ladder of my first career. Straight out of college I started working for a large insurance company, well known for customer service to their policy holders, but less known for retaining and engaging top talent.

I climbed to the ranks of a supervisor in the claims department, focusing primarily on supervising the work of claims service representatives handling the First Notice of Loss, the department that handled calls from the routine to the catastrophic house fire or fatality.

When I was promoted to this position I was one of three supervisors working under the manager of the 100 person office. The management culture was somewhat punitive, but definitely nitpicking. Yes we wanted our people to have certain call metrics, but we often overlooked the human element of the individual in search of efficiency that wasn't necessarily dictated from the corporate office. In fact the messaging was often contradictory. What we wanted most was good human interactions but what we MEASURED most was efficiency and call times. To make matters worse, our quality review process was too punitive of minor technical mistakes despite the fact that the customer was clearly HIGHLY satisfied by their experiences with our service reps.

I was in charge of revamping the quality review process and decided to measure what I already knew: Our people always delivered quality scores. I set out to reward that behavior instead of nitpicking things they did wrong that didn't necessarily affect customer experience.

Ultimately when someone was a good employee we sought to make them great. I personally wanted to help them find joy knowing that their work was not their life, but we could use their work to make their lives better.

There had to be something more...

Could I have a bigger impact than in an office of 100 people?

My wife had started her own business and was having some modest success and excellent momentum in that endeavor. Meanwhile a friend of mine asked me if I was willing to invest in a business he was building which was extremely promising. Soon I was convinced that my future lay outside the walls of that building and outside the ladder of that company.

What convinced me of this was an intuitive knowing that whatever promotions lie ahead of me at that company were going to be outside my zone of genius, even though I didn't know WHAT my zone of genius was!

Ironically, I decided to dive headlong into building the business I had invested in and certainly doing things that were OUTSIDE my zone of genius. There I stayed for 4 years seeing us grow a business from $0 to over $1.2 million in annual revenue in three years while using every drop of blood, sweat and tears.

My perspective shifted again as I realized I was far less interested in selling products than I was in selling transformation, understanding, enlightenment, and training.

Coaching as a Calling

How could I coach and train on things that I had not yet fully actualized?

I joined a brand new leadership development company with a friend of mine who was expanding his coaching business from individual coaching to subscription based community growth and leadership development. I stepped aboard as the COO of the organization and together we developed a coaching certification program.

We taught our clients how to help other people discover their individual and unique value, to discover their strengths, and what makes them uniquely able to do the things that they are passionate about doing. The results were life changing and transformative for our clients and for myself.

Coming Full Circle

Returning to the roots of business and employee engagement

The coaching program we developed was geared towards individuals seeking greater self confidence, network marketers, free lancers, and online influencers, but my energy was geared towards teaching these frameworks in small businesses, non profits and in corporate America, in addition to the individual work I was already doing.

I founded EICPR Consulting in 2022 to create INDIVIDUAL JOY and ORGANIZATIONAL RESULTS. I have a three part process:

1. Individual Sessions with each person in the organization to identify their strengths and how to apply them in their current role using the EICPR framework.

2. Group Integration Experiences where I meet with teams and we integrate one another's strengths in a celebratory experience geared towards recognizing people's strengths and areas of genius and helping the team recognize what areas frustrate them in an open and honest dialogue.

3. Consultative Leadership Development where I help each team member grow in the four areas of leadership: Trust, Hope, Stability & Compassion.

What sets my consulting services apart from business coaches and motivational speakers is how highly personalized my consulting is. As one of my clients said,

"I've been a part of other leadership development programs and what I love about what you did is you didn't tell us how to run our business.

Instead you taught us about ourselves, our inner motivations, and our deeper desires and how to leverage those for the benefit of the entire organization. The experience was 100% worth it."

- Colby Newton, VP of Sales, Clean Simple Eats

I look forward to providing your organization with the kind of individualized, team building experience most consultants in my space are unwilling to provide.
